The Gain knob sets the volume of the player. If there's nothing playing when you change the volume then it will play the last announcement again so you can hear what you're doing.
Click on the little white i button in the bottom right-hand corner to see the other settings for the player.
The first setting on the back is how often the player checks the podcast feed to see if there are any new announcements. If you choose a long interval, like once an hour then you will probably hear several announcements, bunched together, every hour. If you choose a short interval, like every 5 minutes, then you'll hear the announcements nearly as soon as they are made but your computer and your network connection will be a little busier. If you have your computer set up to go to sleep when you're not using it then you might want to avoid very short settings which will keep your computer awake even when you're away from it. If you set this control to never then the player will just sit there and not collect any new announcements until you choose some other setting; this is a bit like pausing the player.
The Reset Player button makes the player forget any settings you've made and also forget which tracks it has played. After you're pressed this button you'll hear all the announcements that are currently in the podcast feed.
